O prefeito de São Paulo é reconhecido pelo hábito de, diariamente, sair do gabinete e fazer uma visita externa na cidade. Em uma de suas primeiras "saídas à rua" no ano de 2012, Gilberto Kassab veio ao Sítio Morrinhos, onde está sediado o Centro de Arqueologia de São Paulo, para visitar a mostra "Escavando o Passado".

"Em uma cidade como São Paulo é fundamental ter um espaço assim para a preservação da nossa história", disse o prefeito, que também afirmou que a esse centro se dirigem todos os resquícios históricos encontrados em obras da prefeitura e também de particulares.

A arquiteta Paula Nishida coordena esse centro há três anos, e informou que recentemente acabou uma prospecção arqueológica junto à Casa do Grito, no Ipiranga. Em breve devem começar prospecções na Fábrica Matarazzo, na Pompéia, e outra na av. Brig. Luis Antônio, próximo ao centro. "A arqueologia está crescendo no país todo em razão das grandes obras, que podem ser até embargadas por questões arqueológicas", informou Paula.

A casa do Sítio Morrinhos é uma das edificações mais antigas existentes em São Paulo. No umbral da porta principal há uma inscrição que indica a data de 1702. Adquirida em 1902 pelos monges do Mosteiro de São Bento, a casa foi doada em 1948 para a prefeitura, ano em que foi tombada pelo IPHAN, órgão de preservação federal.
